Since 2015, Annie has been organizing a monthly early jazz & swing jam in cooperation with Swing Asheville, the local swing dance organization. She learned to play jazz by playing with others, and was lucky enough to have some extraordinary musicians who jammed with her while she figured out the style. Wanting to increase the pool of musicians (and to get more women playing jazz!), she decided to start up this jam so that others could have the same opportunity to learn.
The Community Jazz Jam is the first Tuesday of every month at The Block off Biltmore, in downtown Asheville, NC, and runs from 9-11 pm. There is a house band to hold it down, and we welcome anyone to join in with their acoustic instrument! Those who play upright bass, drums or piano can switch off with the house musician, and all levels are welcome. Vocalists, please check and see if any of the songs work for your range, and let us know when you get there if you’d like to sing a few.
If you are just getting started playing early jazz & swing, check out the FAQ page. If there are questions that you’d like answered, please let us know.
